Instead of lyrics being submitted, Joel sent an email to Smoocher with the following challenge:

At this time I am not happy with the choices we have lined up for 2007's Summer Jam. Please write and record the song that will be on everyone's boombox at the beach, everyone's lips while they toil away in their air-conditioned offices, and played at everyone's wedding reception in a couple of years. Here are some rules:

1. Song should be new and recorded before June 20th, 2007 (the official start of summer).
2. The song should be written with summer in mind. The word summer is not necessary, but song should be/feel/sound summery.
3. Song should be awesome.
